Air Conditioning Installation Tips for Older Homes

If you recently bought an old house or are in the process of doing so, you might want to know how the air conditioning works. If your house has a forced-air heating system, it will be easier to add air conditioning as ductwork is already available. On the other hand, if you have a hydronic heating system, you might not have a better choice than to install a complete central AC system.

While you can install conventional ducts during air conditioning repair, these consume a lot of space and your old house might not have enough room. So, what should you do? There are two alternative options you can make use of high-velocity ducts and ductless mini-split systems.

Ductless mini-split system

This system has no ducts and lacks a central distribution system. So, an outdoor condenser is used to supply coolant to one or more air handlers in separate rooms.  The refrigerant is carried in small lines that use just a tiny opening in the wall. Although the system's air handlers are larger and more prominent than the standard type, they are less bulky.

One condenser is able to supply adequate coolant for at least six air handlers inside the house. As a result, the ductless mini-split system is so flexible and easy to install. As this system is available, you can survive through the heat and humidity of the summer better than the original owner of your old home did. This system is ductless and installation will not alter your walls in any way.

High-velocity ducts

High-velocity ducts are better than the past air conditioning units. Although the two systems make cold air in the same manner, the distribution method is different. The high-velocity ducts are as tiny as two inches in diameter and this facilitates the installation process. Their working mechanism isn't complicated as well. Under high pressure, cold air is compelled into the main supply trunk.

Then the tinier distribution ducts deliver air to separate rooms at high rates—1,200 cubic feet per minute. There are baffles inside the ducts that minimize noise. The system's air outlets are 5" in diameter and so are much tinier than the older air registers. According to most manufacturers, high-velocity duct systems mix air better at lower pressures than the older systems do. Hence, even temperature levels can be attained.

Make sure that you select a technician who knows exactly how these systems work. Although the cost may be bigger initially, you will recover your money in the future.

Apart from the two aforesaid options, you may consider installing window units. These are easy to install, energy-efficient, and able to cool rooms during summer. Besides, you can get a variety of these on the market. One thing to note though is that window A/C units are not the ideal solution for your old house if it has several rooms. In such a case, you would be forced to install a unit per room and this can increase the maintenance cost.
