A Few Reasons To Put A Pergola Over Your Patio

If you are trying to figure out a way to add a bit of living space to your home, consider having a pergola installed over your concrete patio. A pergola consists of a framework made of vertical posts with more posts creating a crossbeam of lattice as a roof. They provide shade so you can sit and enjoy the patio without the sun beating down on you. In addition to blocking the sun, pergolas offer many other benefits to homeowners. Here are just a few you should enjoy.

Garden Space

Many flowers, bushes, and even fruits and vegetables can be grown on a pergola. You can use the vertical poles to help hold up plants that tend to fall over such as rose or berry bushes. Plants that hang can be grown on the crossbeam lattice. Grapes, wisteria, and clematis look beautiful on a pergola. Tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, and peas can also be grown on them, making harvesting much easier.

Privacy

If you want a bit of added privacy, you can add a few pieces of lattice or even cloth to the sides of a pergola. You may want to have roll-up blinds or perhaps any type of vertical blinds attached to the top edges of the pergola. This will allow you to have privacy when wanted or you can roll the blind up and just have it open to the yard.

Value

While you may not be worried about selling your home now, but at some point in the future, it may be a possibility. When you have the added entertainment space a pergola can create, you add value to your home. Depending on the material used, maintenance can be as simple rinsing it down with a hose or you may need to paint it every few years. As long as you keep it in good condition, you will be pleasantly surprised at how much a pergola can increase the value of your home.

A concrete patio may make a nice area for cooking and having a meal. However, if it is not covered, you may have to contend with the weather while trying to entertain or just enjoy the outside with family. The sun may cause sunburns, rain will make everything wet, and wind can have everything blowing all over the place. A pergola can make sure you and your family get to enjoy being outside regardless of the weather.
