Do You Need New Windows? Look For These Signs

Deciding when to replace the windows in your home is not something that is easy to do. The windows may seem fully functional, but there are many reasons that can help motivate the need for replacement. Here are some signs to look out for that your home windows need to be replaced.

Damage

Your windows may be suffering from physical damage that cannot be repaired. This is often the case with wood windows that are rotting, fog between the glass that is a sign of failing seals, and old cracked vinyl that is allowing heat to transfer in and out of your home.

Difficulty Operating

Another problem to look out for are windows that are difficult to operate. They may have been painted shut at some point and have never been easy to operate since then, no longer stay open without having to prop them up, or have cranks that have stopped working completely. Your windows are not just for keeping your home sealed, because you'll want to be able to open them and let in fresh air at different times during the year.

High Energy Bills

Have you noticed that your energy bills are higher than normal? Your windows could be the cause of this, especially if you are experiencing noticeable drafts when the windows are closed. New windows are going to form a much better seal that will help your home stay cool in the summer and warm during the winter, which will make you feel more comfortable as well.

Difficult Maintenance

Do you have old wood windows that require you to sand and stain the wood to keep it in good condition? It's possible that you want to switch to something like vinyl windows, which require much less maintenance over the years. This can be appealing to the type of homeowner that doesn't have time for these DIY projects and often ends up neglecting them. In addition, old windows can be much harder to clean because they are missing the modern features that new windows have, such as window panes that tilt inward.

Poor Aesthetics

Your windows may be in rough shape and simply do not look good. This can be a major concern if you are in the process of selling your home and want to increase your home's curb appeal. Buyers are going to see old windows as an item they'll have to upgrade soon after moving in, and would rather find another home that is move-in ready.
